-작가 노트- 이 작업은 정체성에 관한 이야기에서 출발한다. 우리는 모두 고유한 정체성을 지니고 있으며, 마음 한편에는 언제나 그것을 따라 살아가고 싶은 바람을 안고 있다. 그러나 현실 속에서 그 바람은 종종 다른 선택으로 밀려난다. 꽃을 좋아했지만 회사원이 되었고, 연기를 꿈꿨지만 촬영장의 스텝이 되었으며, 커리어우먼을 꿈꾸던 엄마는 주부가 되었다. 그림을 좋아해 작가의 길에 들어선 나 또한 생계를 위해 수많은 아르바이트를 전전하고 있다. 이처럼 현실과 이상의 간극은 늘 마음속에 비어 있는 자리를 남긴다. 작업은 바로 그 간극 속에 머물러 있는 인물들의 이야기에서 시작된다. 스토리텔링처럼 순차적으로 전개되는 이 작업은 삶의 방향을 탐색하며 계속해서 나아가는 인생의 여정을 담고 있다. 현실에서 방황하던 인물은 ‘사슴’이라는 수호자를 만나 자신만의 숲을 찾아 떠난다. 그들의 긴 여정 속에는 외로움과 고난이 존재하고, 때로는 예상치 못한 따뜻함이 함께한다. 이 과정은 멈추지 않고 앞으로 나아가려는 삶의 의지와 용기를 조용히 드러낸다. 여정의 끝이 어디에 닿아 있을지는 알 수 없지만, 작가로서 바라는 것은 그 끝에서 각자가 진정 원하는 것을 발견하고, 다시 그것을 향해 나아갈 수 있기를 바라는 마음이다. 작업에서 주요하게 다뤄지는 요소는 ‘사슴 뿔을 가진 인물’, ‘공간’, 그리고 ‘색채’이다. 공간과 색채는 인물의 심리 상태를 시각적으로 전달하는 중요한 장치로 작용한다. 다양한 레퍼런스를 수집해 공간을 변형하고 결합한 뒤, 서사에 맞는 구도를 구성하고 인물의 내면을 드러낼 색을 더한다. 작품 속에 등장하는 ‘사슴뿔을 가진 인물’은 사슴뿔을 지녔지만 숲에서 살아가지 못하는 존재로, 본래 있어야 할 자리를 잃은 우리의 모습을 상징한다. 언제나 어딘가를 그리워하며 떠날 것 같은 이 인물 앞에 낯선 방문객처럼 등장하는 ‘사슴’은 삶에 찾아올 작은 변화를 예고한다. 꿈속에서 사슴이 길조를 의미하듯, 사슴은 인물이 ‘나만의 숲’을 찾아가는 여정에서 조력자이자 수호자의 역할을 한다. 이 존재에는 방황하는 삶 속에서 사슴과 같은 존재를 만나기를 바라는 작가의 위로와 바람이 담겨 있다. 우리는 모두 바라는 삶을 가지고 있다. 다만 지금은 잠시 현실에 치여 그것을 향해 나아갈 힘을 잃었을 뿐이다. 잠시 숨을 고르고 뒤를 돌아본다면, 여전히 아름다운 세상이 우리를 기다리고 있을 것이다. 그리고 우리는 숲을 찾아 떠나는 사슴처럼, 다시 걸어갈 힘을 얻게 될 것이다. Artist Statement This body of work begins with a reflection on identity. Each of us possesses a unique identity, and somewhere deep within, we carry a quiet desire to live in accordance with it. Yet in reality, that desire is often pushed aside by different choices. Someone who loved flowers becomes an office worker; another who dreamed of acting becomes a crew member on a film set; a mother who once envisioned herself as a career woman becomes a homemaker. I, too, who chose the path of an artist because I love drawing, continue to move from one part-time job to another in order to make a living. The gap between reality and ideals leaves an empty space within us. This work begins with the stories of those who remain within that space. Structured as a sequence of visual narratives, this work traces a life journey in constant search of direction. A wandering figure in reality encounters a guardian known as the deer and sets out to find their own forest. Along this long journey, loneliness and hardship are inevitable, yet unexpected warmth occasionally emerges. This process quietly reveals the will and courage to keep moving forward rather than stopping. Although the destination of the journey remains unknown, my hope as an artist is that, at its end, each individual may discover what they truly desire and find the strength to move toward it once again. The key elements explored in this work are the figure with antlers, space, and color. Space and color function as visual devices that convey the psychological state of the figure. I collect various references, transform and combine spaces, and construct compositions that align with the narrative, adding colors that reveal the character’s inner world. The figure with antlers represents a being who possesses the antlers of a deer but cannot live in the forest—a symbol of ourselves, having lost the place where we truly belong. This figure appears as though constantly longing for somewhere else, always on the verge of departure. The deer, appearing like an unfamiliar visitor before the figure, signals a small yet meaningful change in life. Just as deer are considered auspicious symbols in dreams, the deer in this work serves as both a guide and a guardian on the journey toward one’s own forest. This presence embodies my wish and quiet comfort—that in a wandering life, one might encounter a being like the deer. We all carry a life we long for. Perhaps we have simply lost the strength to pursue it, worn down by reality for a time. If we pause to catch our breath and look back, we may find that a beautiful world is still waiting for us. And like the deer setting off in search of the forest, we, too, may regain the strength to walk forward once more.
